The Quran signifies much more than a holy text for Muslims around the world. Muslims, believers of Islam, regard the Quran as the direct revelation from Allah, preserved in its entirety word by word. Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed to the final Prophet Muhammad (pubh), over a course of 23 years, beginning in the month of Ramadan in roughly 609 AD.
The general architecture of the Quran is divided into a series of chapters (Surahs), which contain verses (Ayats). For easier readability over a course of a month, the Quran is also segmented into 30 roughly equal parts known as Juz. Surahs of the Quran are also often classified as either Meccan or Medinan, depending on the location of their revelation. The Meccan Surahs are believed to have been revealed to Mohammad (pubh) before his migrations to Medina in 622 AD, while the Medinan Surahs are believed to have been revealed to him from that time period till his death.
Below is a list of summary showing the title of each Surah in the Quran, its number of corresponding Ayats and its Meccan/Medinan classification. The pie-charts below reflect the distribution of number of Surahs, Ayats and words in the Quran between Meccan and Medinan Surahs.
